By a two-dimensional numerical simulation for an active-matrix-addressed liquid crystal display, the lateral field effect has been studied. Potential and director distributions have been investigated in detail. It has been shown that a reverse tilt region extends at a gate bus-line side in a pixel and that optical transmission exhibits abnormal behavior on its boundary with the normal tilt region far from an edge. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.
