The gum oleoresins were first steam distilled to separate the turpentine oils from the diterpenes. From the non-volatile diterpene components the neutrals were separated and these components were further fractionated into a carbonyl, a hydroxyl fraction and a fraction of the remaining neutrals. Turpentines, resin acids and neutral compounds were analysed by GC and GC/MS. The composition of the oleoresin of P. resinosa has been found to be very similar to those of P. sylvestris, while the composition of the oleoresin of P. pinea differs remarkably. Besides of limonene as the main component of the turpentine oil, which can be found in that of P. resinosa only in small amounts there are also clear differences in the composition of the diterpenes. In the diterpene fractions of P. pinea isopimaran type compounds are dominating with respect to pimaran type components while in the same fractions of P. resinosa pimaran type compounds are preponderating. Furthermore, in the hydroxylfraction of P. pinea labdane type alcohols have been found in remarkable amounts (43 % of the fraction) while components of this type are absent in the same fraction of P. resinosa.
