IS THE SPLITTING OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING TRANSITION IN YBA2CU3O7-X (X-LESS-THAN-0.05) DUE TO OXYGEN-DIFFUSION LIMITATIONS

The oxygen self-diffusion coefficient in the strongly anisotropic process of the isotope exchange of chain sites in YBa2Cu3O7-x (x<0.02) has been measured. The chemical diffusion coefficient was estimated for the process of the oxidation of the nearly stoichiometric 123. It is shown that the oxygen-diffusion rate is large enough to assure a homogeneous oxygen distribution after annealing at about 320-degrees-C, 200-300 h in oxygen. Therefore, the splitting of the superconducting transition in 123 cannot be explained by the oxygen inhomogeneity in the grains of this material.
