INTRODUCTION The buckling phenomenon in deep drawing processes was recognized as a major obstacle in limiting the ability to produce sound deep drawing products; where blank holder is absent (due to mechanical reasons or others). It appears to be particularly pronounced when relatively thin blanks are used and/or relatively high drawing ratio (say b/a > 2) are used. Geckler [1] was apparently the first one to tackle the problem analytically. He formulated an approximate relationship between the occurrence of buckling; the number of buckled waves and the properties of the material used. Senior [2] elaborated this relationship by using one-dimensional instability analysis (as if the flange area is an infinite narrow strip). Kafutanglu [3] expanded the analysis to incorporate work hardening materials with associated experiments; but again on the basis of one-dimensionality. Yu and Johnson [4] were successful in providing 2-D solutions to few blank holding conditions; causing previous solutions to be particular eases to their solution.
