MULTIPLE-SCATTERING IN THE REFLECTION NEBULA NGC-1999 AND THE NATURE OF INTERSTELLAR DUST

A model of the reflection nebula NGC 1999 has been developed, which accounts for the available surface brightness, polarization and colour data in terms of multiple scattering of light within a large dust cloud. The results indicate a high albedo for the dust and a low value for the refractive index, possibly due to icy grain mantles. The data are best accounted for if the distribution of grain sizes n(a) is approximately power law with an index – 4.24 ± 0.18 in the approximate size range 0.1 © 1983 Royal Astronomical Society.
