VOLUME DEPENDENCE OF REFRACTIVE-INDEX AND ELECTRONIC POLARIZABILITIES OF ALKALI-HALIDE CRYSTALS

摘要
The Wilson-Curtis function for the variation of electronic polarizabilities as recently developed by Coker is used for the evaluation of strain dependence of polarizabilities and refractive index of sixteen alkali halide crystals with NaCl structure. Recent values of potential parameters for the generalized Huggins-Mayer model as derived by Boswarva and Murthy are used in the present calculations. Results are obtained on the basis of different existing theories of electronic polarizabilities. The present work supports the finding that the photoelastic behavior of alkali halide crystals can be explained successfully by considering that the contribution to the strain polarizability effect arises solely from the variation in anion polarizabilities.
