A MATHEMATICAL-MODEL OF SOLID-STATE THERMOOXIDATIVE STABILIZATION OF ACRYLIC FIBERS

摘要
Following a brief review of the reactions that can occur during stabilization of acrylic precursor polymers for carbon fibers, a simplified mathematical model of stabilization in a solid fiber is developed and solved numerically in this study. Examples are given that show the results from this analysis to be entirely consistent with the trends observed in practice. Current optimization schemes for oxidative stabilization involve a trial-and-error approach in achieving the correct temperatures and stabilization time periods. The numerical model given here, fitted with the right combination of rate constants and reaction orders, could serve to replace current optimization procedures.
