The primary concern of the investigations reported in the present paper is the optimization of the design and operational parameters of packed-bed air heaters with single plate (non-selective absorber for non-absorbing packing and glass cover for black painted absorbing packing) above the air channel. For cost-effective applications of the collectors, it is important that, in addition to higher efficiency, the power consumption of the systems be low. Use is, therefore, made of the inter-relationship of the packing size and porosity, air flow rate, duct depth and length with efficiency and pumping power to determine the optimum values of the parameters that would result in higher efficiency but moderate fan running cost. The results are also compared with that of the conventional bare plate air heater without packing in the air channel.
