I(2P1/2) PRODUCED BY THE ENERGY-TRANSFER FROM NCL(ALPHA-1-DELTA) TO I(2P3/2)

Emission from I(2P1/2) at 1.315-mu-m was used to demonstrate resonant energy transfer between NCl(alpha-1-DELTA) and I(2P3/2). The NCl(alpha-1-DELTA) was produced by the reaction of excess Cl with HN3. A rate constant for quenching of NCl(alpha-1-DELTA) by I(2P3/2) was found to be greater than 1 x 10(-10) cm3 s-1. This nearly gas kinetic rate is interpreted as evidence of an efficient near-resonant energy transfer process: NCl(alpha-1-DELTA, v = 0) + I(2P3/2) --> NCl(X 3-SIGMA, v = 2) + I(2P1/2).
