Gracilaria conferta has been cultivated in outdoor tanks for a whole year. Dry weight yield, agar yield, gel strength and epiphytes were determined weekly as dependent variables. Temperature, irradiance and nitrogen concentration in ambient seawater and a seasonal factor were integrated as explanatory variables. The dependent variables were modeled as a linear function of the explanatory variables through a stepwise linear regression. Maximal agar yield also supported high gel strength through a decrease in dissolved nitrogen, restriction of summer irradiance and medium-to-high nitrogen concentration by pulse feeding. A partial antagonism was found between agar yield promotion as opposed to epiphyte restriction, mainly regarding temperature. However, limited irradiance and nitrogen and pH control are practical means for partial epiphyte limitation.
