摘要
In angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with circularly polarized radiation, the photoemission intensities depend on photon helicity. This phenomenon arises for pure electric dipole transitions and nonchiral species provided the target exhibits a spatial orientation (or alignment) and the experimental geometry defines a "handedness". The new type of spectroscopy is illustrated by the examples of photoemission from graphite (0001) and Pd(111) surfaces. It is evident that the effect does not result from the spin-orbit interaction in contrast to the electron spin-polarization phenomena. The measured asymmetries in a direct interband transition depend sensitively on hybridization of the initial or final band states.
