Motivated by these considerations we present here a simple derivation of an explicit quantum noise operator appropriate to the laser. This formulation extends the domain of the quantum theory of the laser to include the effects of finite atomic lifetime on the laser phase diffusion rate~. Such phase diffusion is an important source of error in various heterodyne experiments such as the laser gyroscope [7 ] and the (active) laser gravity wave detector [8 ]. We consider a three-level atom interacting with a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field of frequency £2 inside a cavity. The energy level structure of the atom is shown in fig. 1. We assume that ~2=~o~b; and the level Ic) is far from resonance; i.e; ma~; mbc>> Og~b. The decay of the atom from levels [a) and Ib) to level [c) is described by a reservoir of harmonic oscillators of closely spaced frequencies o~k and annihilation operators bk. Similarly the cavity damping of the field is described by a reservoir of harmonic oscillators of fie- Research supported by the US Office of Naval Research.
