THE ELONGATION OF RADIAL FILAMENTS OF A BOGER FLUID ON A ROTATING DRUM

摘要
A small lump of Boger fluid (1000 ppm polyacrylamide in Maltose-water) placed on the outside of a rotating cylinder grows into a filament which stretches radially away from the drum. The stretching continues until the filament breaks or becomes detached. Considering centrifugal forces alone, the elongational impedance at the particular rate of strain can be determined and this ranges from 70 times to 3000 times the shear impedance in a Brookfield viscometer. From the slight bending of the filament due to the air drag the Young Modulus for the material is found to be 6 multiplied by 10**6N m** minus **2. Superimposed on this fixed bending of the filament there is a slight oscillation of the filament which leads the fluctuating gravitational bending moment by about 10 degree ; from this observation a storage modulus and a dissipative modulus can be estimated for the material.
