摘要
Methods and devices for in-process tool wear monitoring are focused on turning operations. The implementation of a continuous indirect method based on experimental relationships between wear and cutting power is described, which utilizes a power monitor device for sensing the total power required to drive the spindle motor of the machine tool. A procedure for measuring the actual cutting power is also developed, which takes into account the power consumed by the idle-running spindle and its dependence on the thermal state of the machine tool. A system which performs an automatic tool replacement strategy based on such indirect wear measurement is presented and discussed with application on the shop-floor. Furthermore, future developments are outlined in order to integrate a closed-loop adaptive control aimed at maximizing the metal removal rate which is compatible with tool life constraints. © 1990.
