By a combination of H-1 NMR and Mossbauer spectroscopy and chemical analysis, we show that alkyl esters of the amino acids cysteine, serine, and tyrosine can lose protons to form complexes with {Fe4S4}2+ clusters. These data shed new light on the binding of such clusters in biological systems. The temperature-dependence of the chemical shifts in the H-1 NMR spectrum casts doubt on whether the contact shift mechanism is adequate to explain all the observations.
