A mathematical model that allows the calculation of those properties of the smoke plume produced by a forest fire that are relevant for the remote sensing of the smoke itself has been described in a separate paper. In this paper the results of the smoke plume model are used to analyse the performance of automatic detection systems based on infra-red passive sensors and on active optical sensors (lidar).
