摘要
The use of plasma spraying for ceramic coatings constitutes a well-established and versatile technique able to provide solutions to difficult technical problems. This is particularly true in substituting expensive alloys by cheaper alternatives without reduction of service life. The main problems related to this technique are the bonding quality of the coating as well as the control of the microstructure and porosity of the coated material. In the present work an investigation was carried out to study the necessary treatment of the metallic surface before coating in order to improve the bonding. Laser treatment of a stainless steel surface was studied as opposed to chemical and mechanical treatment. Plasma-sprayed coatings were made employing alumina. Finally, the coating surface was treated by excimer lasers in order to reduce the porosity, to diffuse the coating material into the metal, to achieve proper microstructure and homogeneity of the coating and to reduce the stress in the coated material.
