DISLOCATION PATTERNING DURING MULTIPLE SLIP OF FCC CRYSTALS - A SIMULATION APPROACH

A three-dimensional simulation of dislocation dynamics and interactions is applied to the question of the formation of cell structures in single crystals oriented for multiple slip. The numerical conditions selected are those of a [100]-oriented aluminium single crystal tested in constant total strain rate with a high initial applied stress. The dislocation configurations obtained after deformations of the order of 10(-3) are examined under load and after unloading. Thin foils extracted from the simulated configurations show evidence for organized structures which can be considered as preliminary stages of cell formation. These results are critically and prospectively discussed.
