摘要
The reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant in Jeddah (phase I) is the largest seawater RO plant in the world. It has been in operation since 1989 and produced very good permeated water for the first two years. However, a deviation of the actual quality of permeated water from the originally prediction has occurred, and the reasons and counter-measures were investigated. It was discovered that the main cause of the deteriorating quality of the permeate was due to a chlorine attack on the cellulose triacetate (CTA) molecule and main chain of CTA molecules was gradually decomposed by the chlorine due to an oxidation reaction. The rate of the deterioration was accelerated in the presence of heavy metals such as copper and cobalt in the Red Sea. A decrease of chlorine injection is effective as a counter-measure.
