摘要
A colposcope with a camera attachment was used for noninvasive examination of the external genitalia in 190 patients 1-14 years old, who were referred for sexual abuse evaluations. In a subset of 88 patients, in whom clear colposcopic photographs were obtained, 33 (37%) had abnormal findings on examination but only 26 (30%) were believed to have findings suspicious for sexual abuse after a review of the colposcopic photographs. ECG calipers were useful in obtaining direct horizontal measurements of the hymenal opening. The measurements were closer to those taken from photographs on each patient (mean difference 0.6 mm) than direct measurements using a paper tape measure (mean difference 2.4 mm). The review of colposcopic photographs decreased the frequency of findings suspicious for sexual abuse in this population of referred patients.
