摘要
Southern pine (Pinus taeda) foliage was extracted with 5% sodium hydroxide solution at 95-degrees-C. Copolymer resins of phenol, formaldehyde, and the foliage extracts were synthesized having 60% by weight of the phenol being replaced with the extracts. The copolymer resin was evaluated for its bonding quality in southern pine particleboards, sweetgum flakeboards, oak flakeboards, and composite panels, where southern pine veneer faces and backs were laminated onto oak cores. The hot press time requirements of the copolymer resin in manufacturing of these boards were also investigated. A commercial P-F resin, catalyzed with resorcinol resin, was used as the control. The resorcinol catalyzed commercial control as well as the experimental copolymer resin did not pass the APA 6-cycle test for the oak flakeboards. In boning southern pine particleboards, the experimental copolymer resin passed the APA 6-cycle test with press time of as little as 75 seconds, yet, even at a longer press time of 90 seconds, the commercial control resin delaminated immediately after release from the hot press. However, the control resin passed the test in bonding sweetgum flakeboard at 90 seconds and southern pine particleboard at 105 seconds press times. The press times needed to retain the thickness of the stops for the resorcinol catalyzed commercial control resin were longer than 120 seconds in bonding oak flakeboard and approximately 105 seconds for pine particleboards. In contrast, the experimental copolymer resins of pine foliage extracts needed only approximately 90 seconds. The resorcinol catalyzed commercial control resin delaminated immediately after release from the press after 90 seconds in bonding pine particleboards.
