THE POLYTHIOPHENE PUZZLE - ELECTROCHEMICAL AND SPECTROELECTROCHEMICAL EVIDENCE FOR 2 OXIDATION LEVELS

摘要
Polythiophene films are oxidized in acetonitrile in two reversible stages at 0.27 and 0.57 V versus Ag/Ag+ each involving 0.125 e/ring. Cyclic voltammetry at different temperatures, solvents and electrode surface conditions indicates that the occurrence of a single oxidation process is caused by slow transport of counteranions. In situ e.s.r. and optical measurements show that spinless species (bipolarons) are generated at the maximum oxidation level of each step, spin-bearing species (polarons) being produced at intermediate oxidation in the first process only.
