摘要
Superficial Vickers microhardness readings for multilayered (plated or coated) surfaces are interpreted. Test series of palladium, nickel and copper plated specimens (with or without hard or soft gold flash) were analyzed at small values (t/d < 0.2) of the ratio of plating thickness to indentation diagonal. Knowing the intrinsic hardness and geometry of the various constituent layers, and the superficial indentation hardness of the substrate, a predictive procedure for obtaining the composite superficial hardness was developed. The method, a further development of Jonsson and Hogmark's theory (B. Jonsson and S. Hogmark, Thin Solid Films, 114 (1984) 257-269), is equally applicable to diagnostic purposes, i.e. estimating the thickness and intrinsic hardness for (some of) the constituent films. Deformation fields for plating configurations were computed by finite element methods, in support of the new theory.
