The erosion behavior of SiC-reinforced alumina-matrix composites containing up to 25 weight % SiC fibers was investigated for a range of erodent particle sizes, velocities and impact angles. Additions of SiC fibers can provide a substantial improvement in the erosion resistance of the base alumina. The basic trends in the data can be explained using existing erosion models, but with suitable modifications to account for the effect of crack-closing pressure due to fiber pull-out to lateral crack propagation.
