The problem of coupling between oscillators has been treated analytically recently by the authors and many of the characteristics describing the synchronization states have been derived without any need for applying approximations. A new analytical treatment of the previous system is discussed here and demonstrates that some of the synchronization states regarded as stable are in fact unstable, and therefore do not appear to possess an obvious experimental counterpart. It is also pointed out that the range of coupling factors between oscillators which can be tackled by the new method is not limited to the ‘cosine’ type of coupling developed previously; the range of possible coupling modes is much wider. This relatively large potential of variability of the treated systems suggests that they are likely to represent natural and technological situations. © 1985, Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
