RESTORATION PROCESS OF A CRATER ON A METAL-SURFACE

摘要
The role of surface diffusion and steps on the filling process of a crater on the surface is investigated by computer simulation. The lattice gas model is used with the nearest neighbor lateral interaction. In the presence of steps, the filling atoms of a crater are supplied from kink sites of nearby steps through a diffusion flux on the terrace because of a concentration gradient of single atoms. If no steps exist, the restoration process does not evolve and thermal equilibrium is held among a crater and single atoms. From the equilibrium concentration of single atoms, the average step free energy of a crater can be estimated with the use of the Gibbs-Thomson relation. The simulated result can explain well the observed behavior of a crater on an Au(111)-plane with STM.
