ON THE EFFICIENCY OF X-RAY GENERATION IN IMPACTS OF COMETARY AND ZODIACAL DUST PARTICLES

摘要
The portion of kinetic energy radiated in the X-ray range due to production of hot expanding plasma clots from collisions of cometary and zodiacal dust particles at high relative velocity is calculated. Thermal Bremsstrahlung and radiative recombination are considered as emission mechanisms for both optically thin and optically thick plasma clots. The results indicate that searches for X-ray radiation from comets of the Halley type which have production rates characterized by a dust-to-gas mass ratio of greater than 0.1 at heliocentric distances of R < 1AU, seem warranted. © 1990.
