BIOLOGICAL PURIFICATION OF WATER BY AN OZONIZER WITH A DISCHARGE-TUBE ELECTRODE

An efficient apparatus with an internal discharge tube electrode has been developed and tested for the biological purification of water. Ultra-pure water can thus be obtained for the semiconductor, pharmaceutical and foodstuff industries. The purification is achieved by means of the combined effect of ozone and UV radiation. The silent discharge ozoniser consists of an internal discharge tube filled with Ar and Hg vapours as the inner electrode and concentric silica glass and cooling water as the outer electrode. The power consumption of this new type of ozoniser is 11.5 W h/gO3and 7.0 W h/gO3for the generation of 1% ozone concentration from dry air and oxygen, respectively. © 1990 IOP Publication Ltd.
