AN ATTEMPT TO PREPARE LA2CUO4 BY HIGH-ENERGY ION-BEAM MIXING

High energy ion beams may be used either to characterize or to mix thick layered samples. This work is an attempt to prepare La2CuO4 films of the family of high transition temperature superconductors family through ion-beam mixing. Trilayers of Cu/La/Cu were subjected first to ambient atmosphere which induced La hydroxidation, and then to energetic Au irradiation at 473 K. Average amount and depth distributions for La, Cu, II and O species were measured, and compounds present in the targets were identified before and after irradiation to investigate the interplay between chemical and ballistic processes in such systems where oxides formed under beam treatment.
