摘要：

It is pointed out that the challenge facing PV developers today is to encompass the separate phases of the software development process within a unified conceptual framework. It is contended that although graphics has long been used as a tool in program development and documentation, the full power of graphics in this area has yet to be realized and exploited. As a first step toward making better use of graphics, 10 categories of program illustrations are identified that, taken together, cover all phases of the software life cycle. Consideration is given to viewing diagrams in the PV system, to the architecture of the prototype, and to creating visualizations.
