THE EXTRACTION OF CERIUM(III) AND LANTHANUM(III) WITH KELEX-100 FROM CHLORIDE SOLUTIONS

A study has been made of the extraction equilibrium of cerium (III) and lanthanum (III) in NaCl solutions with 7-(4-ethyl-l-methyloctyl)-8-hydroxyquinoline (Kelex 100)*1 in n-heptane with the addition of 10% v v n-decanol. It has been found that this equilibrium depends on pH as well as on extractant, metal and chloride concentrations. The extraction constants calculated from the experimental results are log Kex = -16.3 and log Kex = -19.4 for cerium and lanthanum, respectively. Separation of these metals using Kelex 100 is promising, as the Ce/La separation factor values are not less than 200. Simple complexes such as CeR3 or LaR3 seem to be extracted. © 1990.
