Bisphenol A-based epoxy resins were analysed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). The samples were separated into their oligomers according to the degree of polymerization and the type of functional groups. Nine different functional species were found to be present in bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin resins. In the case of resol epoxy resins, in addition to the oligomer distribution, the distribution of the methylol groups was determined. The quantitative treatment of the spectra and the determination of the average functionality and the molar mass of the samples is discussed.
