MAGNETISM AND COORDINATION-NUMBER FOR SYSTEMS WITH UNFILLED D-SHELLS

摘要
We discuss the onset of live magnetic layers in vanadium and palladium slabs with different thicknesses. The coordination number is a key quantity for this purpose, but whereas in vanadium the magnetism is directly related to the number of nearest neighbors, in palladium, with its nearest filled d bands, the effect is more subtle. This leads to live magnetic monolayers for V whereas for Pd(001) only slabs with 2-5 layers are magnetic. Magnetism appears also for 3-6 layers of Pd epitaxially grown on Ag.
