摘要
This study has two main objectives: (1) to examine the relationship between management style and four contingent variables, i.e. hierarchical level; scope of control, complexity of subordinate tasks, and function, taking into consideration the moderating influence of four experience characteristics, specifically, age, gender, seniority, and educational level, and; (2) to identify which situational and experience variables best predict leadership style. Bordeleau's test (1980), measuring nine aspects of leadership, was administered to 229 supervisors of different reporting levels in an organization. A measure of the level of complexity of the supervised jobs was arrived at. The results show: (1) that the complexity of supervised tasks is predictive of a higher degree of flexibility in the exercice of authority and of a lesser interest in the work of subordinates; (2) that supervisors of higher hierarchical levels are less impartial but more flexible than those of lower levels; (3) that openness to discussion and team work decreases as the number of employees supervised increases; (4) that educated, male supervisors are less sympathetic to the personal problems of employees; (5) that women are more likely to maintain friendly relationships with subordinates; (6) that none of the independent variables investigated in this study predict a supportive attitude in a work environment; and (7) that experience related variables have a moderating influence on the relationships between situational factors and management style.
