摘要
A number of nearcritical fluids are compared with organic liquids as extraction solvents, by studying the solubility of beta-carotene using a high-pressure optical cell. N2O and Xe are better solvents than CO2, while in nearcritical hydrocarbons, solubilities approach those in organic solvents. Liquid SO2 appears to be an exceptionally good solvent, but there is evidence of chemical reaction with beta-carotene. The solubility and UV-visible solvatochromic shift of the solute are used to discuss solvation in terms of solvent molecular dipole and polarizability, and also whether the solvatochromic shift can be used as a guide to determine the solubility of beta-carotene in nearcritical fluids.
