Given of the Department of Fuel Science of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciencesa t Pennsylvania State University helped in many ways. We were unusually fortunate in receiving a variety of samples through the kindness and generosity of many friends. Foremost were a collection of maceral concentrates which were obtained from Professor Given. These samples had been prepared in the late fifties by G. W. Fenton and A. H. V. Smith ofthe Coal Survey ofthe British National Coal Board. They were sent to Professor Given through the kindness of Dr. E. Bradburn of the National Coal Board. We are indebted to Professor Given and Professor Alan Davies for the PSOC (coals) and PSMC (maceral concentrates) samples;
