The effects of a zirconia interphase on the mechanical properties of long, continuous, oxide fibre-reinforced oxide ceramic matrix (mullite) composites prepared through a sol-gel route have been studied by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and three-point bending tests. The achievement of a non-brittle composite was related to the absence of chemical reaction between the zirconia interphase and the oxide fibres. Comparison was made with SiC Nicalon fibre woven fabric-reinforced oxide matrix composites.
