The paper describes the development through the stages of investigation and design to the construction of a scheme for disposal of the sewage from the City of Edinburgh, Great Britain to replace the present system of discharge in the crude state through a number of short outfalls to the Forth estuary. The scheme falls into three components; the collection of the sewage, its treatment and the final disposal. Collection of the sewage requires an extensive interceptor sewer system, treatment is to the primary stage on a site reclaimed from the estuary, and disposal of the effluent is through an intricate outfall system with disposal of the sludge at sea.
