摘要
A new fibre-optic sensor is proposed with the fibre transmissivity sensitive to the curvature of deflected structures. This sensitivity is preferential about a chosen axis, so that vector measurements can be made with an array of such sensors. In contrast to measuring strain directly, which is often hampered by the true/apparent strain ambiguity, there is no difference between fibre and structure measurands in measuring curvature. With structural thicknesses below about 2.5 cm, the proposed sensor exceeds the sensitivity of strain gauges, infinitely so along the neutral axis where there is no strain in bending. Deformation curvatures with a diameter approaching 5 km have been measured using such sensors.
