SOME NEW ASPECTS OF ADIABATIC CALORIMETRY AT LOW-TEMPERATURES

Aspects of low temperature adiabatic calorimetry which we have developed in the past several years are reviewed with emphasis laid on the role which the matured experimental method can play in physical chemistry of condensed phases. Two types of adiabatic calorimeters are described, both of which work between 13 and 373 K on small amounts of samples and are fully computer-controlled. Some recent results of measurement on ammonium hydrogen oxalate hemihydrate, the thiourea carbon tetrabromide inclusion compound, schizophyllan solutions and swelling of vermiculite are presented to illustrate the versatility of the adiabatic calorimetry. Measurement of time dependent properties is also discussed. © 1990.
