Callus and cell suspension cultures of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) have been established in Gamborg's B5 medium supplemented with 2% sucrose, 1.0 mg l-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 0.1 mg l-1 kinetin. Biomass accumulation was affected by the density and age of inoculum, vessel size and sucrose level. 8% sucrose medium in 2-1 flasks induced biphasic growth, with fructose as the only source of carbon and energy in the second phase.
