THE FAR-INFRARED-RADIO RELATION IN CLUSTER SPIRAL GALAXIES

We present a study of the far-infrared (FIR) and radio emission in a sample of group and cluster spiral galaxies. Galaxies are separated into rich and poor cluster samples based the value of the galaxy-galaxy correlation coefficient (Andersen & Owen 1994) of their parent cluster. Galaxies in the rich clusters have lower-FIR-radio ratios than a radio selected sample of field galaxies, while galaxies in poor clusters do not. We find that the degree of radio enhancement with respect to FIR emission is consistent with a model where the radio emitting ISM is compressed by the ram pressure as the galaxy moves through the intracluster medium. We suggest that galaxy-galaxy tidal interactions are important in the poorer clusters, but in general of much less importance in richer clusters.
