PHOTODEGRADATION OF DI-NORMAL-BUTYL-ORTHO-PHTHALATE IN AQUEOUS-SOLUTIONS

The photodegradation of di-n-butyl-ortho-phthalate in oxygenated aqueous solutions was studied in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, ferric ions, sodium periodate and suspended titanium dioxide by measuring the release of carbon dioxide and the disappearance of the UV absorption band at lambda(max) = 276 nm. A 70 W high-pressure mercury lamp and natural sunlight were used as light sources. Most effective photodegradation was achieved with 0.1 M NaIO4 (t1/2 = 0.5 h) or with 50 mM H2O2 plus 1 mM Fe3+ (t1/2 = 1.0 h). The combined effect of hydrogen peroxide and ferric ions on the photodegradation of di-n-butyl-ortho-phthalate may possibly be considered as a photo-Fenton reaction.
