A MODEL FOR THE THERMAL-CONDUCTIVITY OF YBA2CU3O7-DELTA

Thermal conductivity measurements have been performed upon a sample of YBa2Cu3O7-delta which has been subject to a series of heat treatments in order to remove oxygen from the material. The measurements show a strong correlation between oxygen content and the thermal conductivity of YBa2Cu3O7-delta; a reduction of the oxygen content results in a substantial lowering of the thermal conductivity over the measured temperature interval. A model has been constructed which demonstrates that changes in phonon lifetimes associated with the transition between the electrical insulating and metallic states cannot account for the behaviour of YBa2Cu3O6 and YBa2Cu3O7. The model suggests that there must be a significant extra contribution to the thermal conductivity in both the normal and superconducting samples.
