DIRECT OBSERVATION OF ANTICROSSING BEHAVIOR IN A LUMINESCENT CR3+-DOPED SYSTEM

We present a direct experimental demonstration of 2E-4T2 anticrossing behavior in Cr3+. The behavior was seen in a high-pressure luminescence study of Cr3+:Gd3Sc2Ga3O12. Upon increasing pressure, the energy of the R lines (2E→4A2 transition) of Cr3+ first increases, then levels, and finally decreases. This shift reversal for the R lines of Cr3+ is attributed to a decrease in 2E-4T2 spin-orbit coupling with increasing pressure. A simple anticrossing model provides reasonable quantitative agreement with the data. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
