THERMO-REVERSIBLE SEPARATION OF ORGANIC-SUBSTANCES BY USING THERMORESPONSIVE POLYMER GEL

Poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) solution is easily crosslinked by gamma-ray irradiation. PVME gel is hydrated and swells below the transition temperature (38 degrees C), and becomes hydrophobic and shrinks above the temperature. In this report, the thermoreversible separation method of organic substances was investigated. Aqueous PVME solution (30 wt%) was crosslinked by gamma-ray irradiation with 15 Mrad. PVME gel was immersed in the non-ionic surfactant solution, polyoxyethylene nonyl phenyl ether (NP-10), and the concentration was measured by HPLC at regular time intervals. The surfactant was adsorbed on the PVME gel when temperature or surfactant concentration increased. At temperatures of 10 degrees C to 50 degrees C, the adsorption followed the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The adsorption and desorption were thermoreversible.
