SURFACE-TEMPERATURE OSCILLATIONS OF A FLOATING ZONE RESULTING FROM OSCILLATORY THERMOCAPILLARY CONVECTION

摘要
The surface temperature of stationary molten zones in Mo and Nb rods was measured as a function of the heating power. At well defined stability limits, single-mode temperature oscillations were detected. The frequency agreed well with that determined from periodic impurity striations characteristic for crucibleless electron zone melting of Mo at a critical zone length. The results are regarded as an experimental verification of a transition of stationary Marangoni convection to an oscillatory state for low Prandtl number liquids. © 1990.
