COMPARISON OF WATER-USE EFFICIENCY AND INTERNAL LEAF CARBON-DIOXIDE CONCENTRATION IN JUVENILE LEAVES AND PHYLLODES OF ACACIA-KOA (LEGUMINOSAE) FROM HAWAII, ESTIMATED BY 2 METHODS

To gain further insight into comparative ecophysiology of different leaf types, water-use efficiency (WUE) and internal leaf carbon dioxide concentration (C(i)) were estimated in the field for juvenile leaves and phyllodes of Acacia koa by carbon dioxide and water vapor exchange using a closed system infrared gas analyzer and humidity sensor, and by deltaC-13 measurements. Both methods indicate that phyllodes possessed higher WUE and lower C(i) than juvenile leaves. However, C(i) predicted by deltaC-13 for juvenile leaves and phyllodes was lower than the average gas exchange estimated values of C(i) and closer to minimal ps exchange estimated values of C(i). It is suggested that deltaC-13 may be influenced more during times of maximal assimilation and leaf expansion than during maintenance.
