A significant improvement in the design ofthe oscillometer and its use as an analytical instrument for microbial conductimetric and enzyme evaluations is reported. Employing a novel hybrid test cell and specialised amplifier circuits, a very high resolution of greater than 5 × 10-9 is obtained over a conductivity band of 6 mS cm-1 in the range 1·4-22 mS cm-1. Design considerations emphasise the nature of the amplifier/cell arrangement unlike many previous studies, which tended to understate practical design constraints. Such treatments typically ignored the value of complementary cell/amplifier action, focusing on theoretical models of test cell operation and behaviour. Performance and calibration data are presented based on electrolytes and non-polar liquid dielectrics. © 1990.
