VIGABATRIN

Vigabatrin is used as an add-on anticonvulsant drug in the therapy of pharmacoresistant focal and/or secondarily generalised tonic-clonic seizures. Reduction of seizure frequency by more than 50% can be expected in approximatively 50% of patients treated with vigabatrin. This therapeutic effect remains un changed during the subsequent years of therapy in again nearly 50% of these patients. Depression, psychoses and weight gain must be emphasized as possible adverse effects of vigabatrin. Interactions with other anticonvulsant drugs are confined to a possible reduction of phenytoin plasma concentrations.
